The Kite Runner
An original co-production between Nottingham Playhouse and Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse in 2013, directed by Giles Croft. A UK Tour commenced in 2014 with UK Productions and Flying Kite Productions. From the book by Khaled Hosseini, adapted by Matthew Spangler.
Musically, the piece is based around an on-stage tabla player. I adapted a number of Indian thals over five weeks, working closely with Hanif Khan. I also used a tamboura, singing bowls, schwirrbogen and a metal car-spring to involve the actors in creating a live soundscape. Farshid Rookey (Hassan in 2013 production) helped translate into Dari for me for the four live songs that permeate the show (many thanks to him), sung by David Ahmad and Lisa Khan. Finally, there are source-songs like the live Farsi Happy Birthday or the recorded Ahesta Boro (wedding song) that add further authenticity to the show, with more fun stuff as the show moves through the 80s.
